The future of homes

The future of homes
Our idea of home is changing. Explore the shifts in society and tech shaping a new way of living where home goes beyond four walls.

What’s the future for our homes?

‘Recent technological developments in the home have drastically changed how we perceive and interact with our domestic environment but the key themes and issues around domestic design remain the same over the past century. Home Futures looks at past futures in comparison with the present,’ says Eszter Steierhoffer, senior curator at the Design Museum and curator of the Home Futures exhibition.

Look back to move forward

‘This is an exploration of today’s home through the imagination of the past. It’s playful, avant garde and underlines that the future is not a set destination but a direction,’ says SPACE10’s Simon Caspersen.
"Our behaviour is changing, we perceive the boundaries of home in a completely different way while our environment and buildings remain quite conservative."

Designing an exhibition

‘By partnering with the Design Museum we are continuing our mission to collaborate with organisations that view the world from a different perspective, letting us gain new insights into this crazy old world of ours,’ says Jutta Viheria, exhibition and communications manager, IKEA Museum.
"I hope people are inspired to rethink how they would like to live. And realise that the future is not yet defined, and we can all be part of shaping our future cities, neighbourhoods and homes"

The experience

The Home Futures exhibition is curated under six themes. The IKEA future living lab SPACE10 has contributed to the section called ‘living with others’. ‘Visitors can climb down a rabbit hole into a beautiful, soft installation where you can sit and lie with friends and strangers and explore the results of the One Shared House 2030 survey,’ says SPACE10’s Simon Caspersen.
"Visit Home Futures at the Design Museum London until March 24. Then see it at the IKEA Museum, Älmhult. Look out for confirmation of the opening date!"
