Have you ever felt that a room is already neatly arranged, but the atmosphere still feels less comfortable? The issue might be the lighting. Downlights can help provide illumination from above without making the ceiling look too busy. However, there are different types.
Let’s discover the right options so you can plan your home lighting more effectively.
What is a downlight?
A downlight is a light fixture installed on or near the ceiling surface, with the light predominantly directed downward. This type of lighting is often used to provide general illumination while maintaining a simple ceiling appearance.
When planning an interior, you should not choose a downlight based solely on its shape. Consider the function of the room, the areas that need illumination, ceiling height, light colour, and installation requirements. With this approach, lighting can work as part of the room design rather than simply as an addition.
Types of downlights based on installation method
In general, the installation method is one of the easiest ways to distinguish between different types.
1. Recessed downlight or built-in light
A recessed downlight is installed into the ceiling so that most of the fixture is concealed. The result looks streamlined and works well with modern or minimalist interiors. This type usually requires a ceiling opening that matches the specifications of the light fixture.
One option representing this type is the PHILIPS 59449 MESON 105 9W 65K. This recessed light produces 680 lumens, uses 9 W of power, has a diameter of approximately 4 inches, an IP20 rating, and a lifespan of approximately 15,000 hours.
For a warmer atmosphere, there is also the PHILIPS 59449 MESON 105 9W 30K, which provides yellow light with an output of approximately 630 lumens.
2. Surface-mounted or ceiling-mounted light
Unlike recessed lights, the surface-mounted type is attached directly to the ceiling surface, so it does not require as much ceiling depth as a recessed downlight. This type can be considered when the ceiling construction does not allow for recessed light installation.
One IKEA option is the BARLAST LED ceiling/wall lamp. This 25 cm diameter lamp uses integrated LED lighting, provides diffused light around the room, and has an IP44 rating, meaning it has been tested for bathroom use. The light source has a lifespan of approximately 25,000 hours.
